Boston Scientific Hit By Cyber-Attack, Shares Tumble

Boston Scientific disclosed that it was hit by a cyber-attack this week that is disrupting access to company information systems and applications, including shipment services. The $72 billion medical device maker said in an SEC filing that it is working to restore affected functions, but the timeline for full recovery is not yet known. The disclosure sent shares down 5.8% in premarket trading, adding pressure to a company already facing slowing sales growth and a weaker profit outlook earlier this year.

The operational impact is especially serious because Boston Scientific makes critical medical devices such as pacemakers and stents, where shipment delays can affect hospitals, physicians, patients, distributors, and revenue recognition. Analysts at Piper Sandler said management indicated it could take weeks to resume normal operations, and estimated that the company may return to shipping all products in less than three weeks.
