The University of Texas at San Antonio was forced to take some systems offline after threat activity at the edge of the university’s network over the weekend was discovered. The university, which serves about 40,000 students across six campuses, said phones and other systems were disrupted as teams worked to contain the incident before classes began. UTSA said it found no evidence that university data was accessed or exfiltrated, but the disruption still affected critical start-of-semester operations, including payment deadlines, course waitlists, and password resets.
The timing is especially damaging because cyber-attacks against universities often hit when operational pressure is highest: the start of classes, finals, registration periods, holiday breaks, and payment deadlines. Even if attackers never reach core systems, taking phones, academic services, identity systems, or enrollment tools offline can immediately disrupt students, faculty, staff, and campus operations. UTSA’s response shows the tradeoff every university faces during an active threat: preserve availability for the academic year or isolate systems to prevent ransomware, lateral movement, data theft, or deeper compromise.
