Grocery Distributor UNFI Faces Operational Disruption After Cyber Attack
United Natural Foods Inc. (UNFI), a major North American grocery wholesale distributor, recently disclosed a cyberattack that significantly disrupted its operations. In a filing to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), UNFI confirmed unauthorized activity in its IT systems. The company took certain systems offline as a containment measure, which temporarily hindered its ability to fulfill and distribute customer orders. While the exact nature and origin of the attack remain undisclosed, the impact has been material and ongoing.
UNFI has implemented business continuity workarounds and has notified law enforcement. The attack, part of a broader surge in cyber threats against the food and agriculture sector, highlights vulnerabilities in digital supply chains and operational technology (OT) infrastructure. No ransomware group has claimed responsibility, but the incident aligns with a broader trend - ransomware attacks surged 46% in Q1 2025, with OT systems being prime targets.
This breach underscores the growing risks facing critical industries as cybercriminals increasingly target both IT and OT environments. Given the complexity and interconnectedness of today’s digital ecosystems, organizations - especially those in critical sectors like manufacturing, distribution, and logistics - must adopt a unified cybersecurity monitoring approach. A single, integrated platform capable of monitoring and protecting the full stack - network, applications, endpoints, infrastructure, IT and OT - is the only solution to providing 100% situational awareness. This unified visibility enables early threat detection, faster incident response, and minimizes operational downtime, reducing both business and reputational risk. In an era of relentless cyber threats, siloed defenses are no longer sufficient - comprehensive, centralized monitoring is essential to resilience. Read more about this story on our LinkedIn page
