American Airlines Suffers Outage, Blocking Ticket Sales
American Airlines experienced a major system outage where customers were not able to access its online booking system. The outage stemmed from an application issue with its Airline Reservation System (ARS), which is a critical software platform used by airlines to manage flight bookings and ticket sales. ARS platforms handle internal flight schedules and availability while also enabling customers to search, book, and manage flights. These systems often integrate with Global Distribution Systems (GDS) to support bookings by travel agencies.
This week, an outage with American Airlines' ARS platform lasted about four hours, affecting both its website and mobile app. Customers couldn't book new flights or manage existing reservations. The outage caused major delays, especially at the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW).
In a similar incident, Delta Air Lines previously faced a massive disruption due to a faulty CrowdStrike software update, leading to over 7,000 flight cancellations. Delta is now suing CrowdStrike for gross negligence, after passengers and travel agents also filed lawsuits over the financial impact.
These incidents highlight the vulnerability of organizations that lack robust network and application monitoring for their critical services and infrastructure. Such outages are complex to resolve and can significantly disrupt operations without the right tooling in place. Organizations must invest to create a robust, resilient IT infrastructure with 100% visibility and situational awareness into their entire ecosystem. Read more about this story on our LinkedIn page
