Massive Healthcare Data Breach Impacts 1.6M Patients

A major data breach has impacted 1.6 million individuals after hackers gained unauthorized access to the systems of Laboratory Services Cooperative (LSC), a U.S.-based nonprofit lab testing provider that serves reproductive health clinics, including Planned Parenthood, in 31 states. The cyberattack occurred on October 27, 2024, but affected individuals were not notified until April 10, 2025, after a months-long review of the compromised data. The stolen information spans a broad and sensitive spectrum - ranging from names, Social Security numbers, and medical records to financial and insurance details - raising serious risks of identity theft and fraud.

The breach, one of several to hit the healthcare sector in 2025, highlights how poor cybersecurity practices and the high value of medical data continue to make healthcare institutions prime targets for attackers. In response, LSC is offering free credit monitoring and medical identity protection to affected individuals, and has also made a support hotline available. The incident underscores the urgent need for stronger cyber defenses across the healthcare industry. Read more about this story on our LinkedIn page
