Ransomware Attack on State Media Disrupts Putin’s Birthday

On the Russian President Vladimir Putin’s 72nd birthday, multiple Russian broadcasters were affected by a major cyberattack. The broadcasts of Russian state TV channels Rossiya-1, Rossiya-24, Rossiya Kaltura, Karusel, around 80 regional TV and also radio stations such as Vesti FM and Mayak were all adversely affected by the cyber incident.

A hacker group that is being blamed for the ransomware attack, draws its nickname "Sudo rm -RF," from the Linux command used to delete files, allegedly has ties to Ukraine. The threat actors had likely used a type of ransomware that deletes files rather than encrypting them.

Russian authorities are calling this an "unprecedented" cyberattack on Russian state media infrastructure and their government has pledged to raise the issue at all international forums, including at UNESCO. Read more about this story on our LinkedIn page
