Energy Giant Halliburton Confirms Data Theft to SEC

The oil and fracking giant, Halliburton, one of the world’s largest energy companies which has close to 48,000 employees in dozens of countries, has confirmed in a filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) that its network was hacked and that threat actors “accessed and exfiltrated information” following a cyberattack. A ransomware gang known as RansomHub is taking credit for the cyberattack.

The form 8-K filing mentions that an unauthorized third party accessed and exfiltrated sensitive information from Halliburton systems, and the company is now in the process of determining the exact scope of the cyberattack. Halliburton has not shared details of the attack with the media or its customers, causing concern to other firms who had their systems connected to Halliburton's platform.
