PhoneSweep is designed to be compatible with all Windows-compatible
serial port solutions. However,
in our testing we have learned that some multiport solutions work better than
others.
We have not found any internal multi-modem solutions that support our Single Call
Detect feature, so we continue to recommend multi-serial port solutions in
conjunction with our recommended external modems.
Please note that Windows
NT does not inherently support the use of multiple multiport serial I/O solutions to
produce larger amounts of serial ports. Some manufacturers have stated they have drivers for
NT available, in general we have not been able to test these.
Sandstorm Recommended Configurations
These multiport solutions are the ones we supply with our bundled laptop
and desktop systems.
We have selected these solutions because we find them the most reliable
and easy to install, as well as being the most cost-effective for the task.

Tested Multiport Solutions
Here you will find a description of all Sandstorm tested multiport
solutions, with comments about each. Please use
this chart to familiarize yourself with the various items so you
can know the best solution for your needs.
If you aren't sure which solution is right for you, we have created
a page to help guide you to various solutions which may fit your
particular unique need.
None of these solutions has, as of December 2007, been tested with
Vista. We will be doing this testing as soon as we have a version of
PhoneSweep that is approved with Vista.

Digi Edgeport 4
Multiport USB box |
Yes |
A |
2005 |
Provides 4 serial I/O ports for your desktop or laptop, connecting
through the USB port of your computer. Approved for Windows 2000 and
XP only. We couldn't get this to work properly on Windows 98, thus
Sandstorm does not approve the Edgeport for that platform. Windows 95
and NT have no inherent USB capabilities, although Digi claims to have
NT drivers for this product. Sandstorm has not tested the NT drivers
and therefore does not recommend this product be used on an NT
system. This 4 port Edgeport offers only DB9 serial connectors,
therefore you should ascertain that you have appropriate cables which
supply the proper connections when using this device.

SeaLevel Systems
VERSA
COMM+4 PCI |
Yes |
D |
2002 |
4-port PCI card which creates 4 serial ports via an octopus cable.
Requires standard modem connector cables.
Works in Windows 95, 98, 2000, NT and XP systems.
Note: Drivers must be installed in a 3 step process to operate properly.
1. Install the SEACOM drivers. 2. shut machine down, place card in machine,
reboot. 3. finish installation of the drivers. Two cards can be
used simultaneously to produce an 8-port solution in Windows 95, 98 and
2000 machines, but not in NT. |
SeaLevel Systems
Seaport USB |
Yes |
A |
2002 |
Connects to a desktop or laptop via the USB port. The lightweight
box creates 4 DB9 serial ports you can plug modems into. Uses the same
SEACOM drivers as the VERSA cards above. Requires standard modem
connector cables. Works in Windows 98, 2000, and XP systems, not in
95 or NT because they don't support USB.
Note: Drivers must be installed in a 3 step process to operate properly.
1. Install the SEACOM drivers. 2. shut machine down, plug in SeaPort,
reboot. 3. finish installation of the drivers.

Quatech QSU-100 |
Yes |
A |
2006 |
Connects to a desktop or laptop via the USB port. This 4-port USB
to RS-232 box is similar to the Sealevel Seaport device described
above. The lightweight box creates 4 DB9 serial ports you can plug
modems into. Quatech also supplies drivers for Windows NT 4.0 which
Sandstorm has not had the opportunity to test, thus Sandstorm only
recommends this device with Windows 98, 2000, and XP (Windows 95 has
no USB capabilities). Note: The similarly-named QSU2-100 will
not work with our products.

VERSA
COMM+8 PCI |
Yes |
D |
2002 |
An 8-port PCI card which creates 8 serial porta via an octopus cable.
Requires standard modem connector cables. Although the 8-port card is
available with DB25 connectors, we recommend
the DB9's (which connect directly to modems) in order to reduce the amount
of required cabling. Works in Windows 95, 98, 2000, NT and XP systems.
Note: Drivers must be installed in a 3 step process to operate properly.
1. Install the SEACOM drivers. 2. shut machine down, place card in machine,
reboot. 3. finish installation of the drivers.

Quatech ESU-100 |
Yes |
A |
not tested |
Note: Sandstorm has not tested this product Because this
8-port USB to RS-232 box is in the same family of products as the
QSU-100 and HSU-100, we believe that it will work in a similar manner
to the HSU-100, but with 8 ports instead of 16. It connects to a
desktop or laptop via one USB port. The lightweight box creates 8
DB25 serial ports you can plug modems into. No external power supply
is necessary or supplied. Quatech also supplies drivers for Windows NT
4.0 which Sandstorm has not had the opportunity to test, thus
Sandstorm only recommends this device with Windows 98, 2000, and XP
(Windows 95 has no USB capabilities). Note: The
similarly-named ESU2-100 will not work with our products.

We have evaluated Dolphin's ISA and PCI cards. They all seem to work.
The cards support COMs 1-8 and LPTs 1-6. Note that the ISA versions of
these cards requires an IRQ for each COM and LPT; you may need to disable
your sound card in order to use them.
