PhoneSweep® Modem Test Results

Modem Test Results

Sandstorm has tested a number of external modems, PCMCIA modems, and internal PCI/ISA modems to determine their compatibility with Single Call Detect™ and PhoneSweep version 4.4 and above. Our results are reported in this chart. Please note the specific models of the modems, as not all modems produced by a manufacturer support Single Call Detect (SCD). Also, since not all modem upgrades/updates support SCD, it is imperative to check with Sandstorm even if the manufacturer insists that "nothing has changed". All modems below are external serial modems, unless noted. All modems in this list have been tested by Sandstorm, unless noted. Only modems that have been found to work with PhoneSweep have links to the companies. As a result of this testing, Sandstorm has compiled a list of Recommended Modems.

Sandstorm specifically recommends against the use of PhoneSweep with "WinModems". These modems work mostly in software, and do not interoperate correctly wtih PhoneSweep. Some of these modems may even crash your computer if you use them with PhoneSweep. Often, they are identified with the words "WinModem", "HSP", or "HCF". In general, modems that come "free" with computers are WinModems.

3.3v Chipsets and PhoneSweep: Conexant updated their older 5.0 volt chipset to use 3.3 volts in early 2001, which caused an incompatibility with older versions of PhoneSweep. PhoneSweep 3.01 corrected this. In general, modems that use the Conexant 3.3v chipset are not compatible with earlier versions of PhoneSweep.

V.92 modems: Sandstorm has added support for some V.92 modems listed below with our new version of PhoneSweep, version 5.0.

Sandstorm Enterprises has reviewed and tested at least one modem from each of the manufacturers listed below. Click on the manufacturer to jump to that area of this table.

AOpen External Box Modem FM56-EX Yes 2000 This works wonderfully with SCD. AOpen has discontinued this model, however, thus it is no longer available.
AOpen External Box Modem FM56-EXV Yes 2008 This is AOpen's V.92 "replacement" for the FM56-EX. PhoneSweep 5.0 supports this modem in Single Call Detect mode. However, in all versions of PhoneSweep prior to version 4.4, Sandstorm's extensive testing of this modem found that while checkmodems reports it to be compatible with Single Call Detect, it in fact gives unreliable results with regards to Fax and Timeouts. In PhoneSweep versions prior to 4.4 it tends to record TIMEOUTs as "VOICE" in Single Call Detect mode. However, if you set this modem to "Never use Single Call Detect" mode when using PhoneSweep versions 4.02 and earlier, it reports results properly.

Best Data PC Card Data/Fax Modem Model 56SPC  Yes 2001 PCMCIA modem. A customer reported that this modem was discontinued by Best Data in late 2001, although it was still on the Best Data site in early 2002. This modem does not work with Windows NT or Windows 2000, and probably not XP either, although it does work in Windows 98. In November 2001 a customer reported that this modem is no longer in production. Best Data no longer has model 56USB-01 on their web site, but it does sell replacement model 56USB, which Sandstorm has not tested.
Best Data Smart One 56K External Data Fax Modem Model 56SX Yes 2005 This modem was tested on Windows 98 and Windows 2000 and worked properly with SCD. In November 2001 a customer reported that this modem was out of production and was replaced by new models with names of "56SX-92", "SX-2" and "SP-SX". The Best Data web site does not appear to have this modem available, but, as the customer said, three other models that are very similar are present. Sandstorm has tested the SX-2 and it works properly with Single Call Detect.

Thus the new replacement was never tested as it wasn't a good candidate for testing.

Perle PCI-RAS 8 Multi modem board with 8 integrated modems See
Notes
2001 Supports SCD, but it's not reliable for scans of any length. During our inhouse tests, the modems would all stop responding during an overnight run. The capability exists for two of these boards to be placed in a machine, resulting in a 16 modem solution. This was successful in Windows 98 (for short scans only), but did not work properly in Windows 2000 because it locked up the computer.
Psion DACOM Gold Card 56K+Fax GSM & ISDN Ready modem and Psion DACOM Gold Card 56K+Fax modem See
Notes
1999 PCMCIA card modems. These modems will likely support SCD in analog mode, but not in ISDN mode. As of 1999 this modem is not being made anymore. It's replacement will not support SCD. US Robotics V.Everything modem See
Notes
2001 This modem does not support SCD mode, and if any mode other than "Never Use SCD" is used, it will give incorrect results. You must also set PhoneSweep to wait at least 10 seconds between calls for the best chance of proper VOICE detection. Occasionally, if the modem starts giving a "Busy" answer for voice mail or a person answering, you will have to replace the modem.
US Robotics was purchased by 3COM, but has continued to sell products under the recognizable "US Robotics" name.
US Robotics External Courier I-Modem (also sold as "3COM Courier I-Modem") See
Notes
2001 This is the Sandstorm recommended modem for ISDN scanning. It is the sole exception to Sandstorm's recommendation against US Robotics modems. In early 2002 we have gotten customer reports that this modem is no longer available through 3COM, the company that bought US Robotics.
US Robotics (other models) No See
Notes
Other US Robotics modems not listed here are not recommended for use with PhoneSweep.Note that the checkmodems program may misidentify other US Robotics modems as supporting SCD, but the chipset used does not support this functionality. Often we have found that their voice detection attempts have caused several problems with some PBXs and voicemail systems.

Zoltrix FM-VXP56e2, VM-VSP56e3, and 8FM56K "Rainbow" modems Yes 2008 V.90 external modem. This modem is also available for countries worldwide. Zoltrix has discontinued production of this modem in 2003.
Zoltrix Raptor 56K Yes
also See
Notes
2008 V.90 external modem. PhoneSweep 5.0 supports this modem in Single Call Detect mode. All versions of PhoneSweep prior to 4.4 will cause this modem to give unreliable results in SCD mode. However, if set to "Never use SCD" in versions of PhoneSweep prior to 4.4 it gives proper results.

However, this modem produces the correct results in "Never Use SCD" mode. Sandstorm tested this model when it was only V.90 capable. Zoltrix appears to have introduced a V.92 version of this modem which we did not test; it is most likely an HCF modem.

Notes
1999 External modem. Early versions of this modem (pre-1998, model 2949) supported SCD, but at some point in early 1999 or so the manufacturer replaced the chipset and thus disabled the capability to perform SCD. The model number can be found on a sticker on the underside of the modem.
