In order to remotely operate a NetIntercept system via its control
network interface, the remote system must have a server for the X
Window System protocol. In order for this connection to be secure, it
needs to be "tunneled" via an encrypted Secure Shell (SSH) connection.
Most Unix systems automatically include the X Window System and SSH
support at no extra cost, but this isn't the case with Windows and
Macintosh systems.
If you want to control NetIntercept remotely from a Windows or Mac PC,
you will need to install a purchased third-party product. To date, we
haven't found a free X Server for Windows or Mac that works well with
NetIntercept.
There are many X Window Servers available today, both commercial and
open-source, that run on a wide variety of platforms. This table lists
several that have been observed to work correctly with NI. Many of
them can be configured to store settings for xhost and/or SSH
tunneling and use them automatically.
Note: a security vulnerabilty has been identified with SSH1. While
all versions of NetIntercept up to 3.0 will work properly with SSH1,
future versions are slated to use SSH2 exclusively. Therefore, if
you are purchasing a solution, ensure that your SSH implementation
has SSH2 if you are intending on upgrading your NetIntercept.
