Major Massachusetts Cyber Crime Unit Deploys NetIntercept
June 17, 2009
When a company or governmental unit is not sure of what type of
network traffic is being generated on its network and they believe
that unauthorized and/or criminal activity is afoot, they have another
tool to call upon - NEMLEC. The North Eastern Massachusetts Law
Enforcement Council's - Cyber Crime Unit.
A NEMLEC Cyber Crime Unit (CCU) is located just minutes away from
Boston, Massachusetts and provides full digital forensic services to
over 50 police agencies. NEMLEC CCU is deploying Sandstorm
Enterprises' NetIntercept software (NI), in support of their criminal
and administrative police investigations. Members of this unit would
(legally) deploy NI software/hardware as a robust incident response
tool in various network settings to assist them with identifying key
evidence transmitted in data packets along with identifying the
source/destinations of this evidence.
Using NetIntercept, this Cyber Crime Unit has a powerful network
forensic tool that would (legally) tap into any computer network and
produce excellent digital evidence. Using NI along with other digital
forensic tools, this Cyber Crime Unit has some of the best tools to
help them identify, document and produce key evidence in support of
their investigations.
According to the Unit's Commander, Detective Lieutenant John McLean,
the NetIntercept product is one of the best network forensic tools he
has seen. "The ability to lawfully and professionally tap into network
traffic, parse the data and see immediate results and then produce
this evidence, supported by further forensic analysis, is real
pro-active cyber-enforcement - at it best".
A number of law enforcement agencies will soon be receiving
introductory training on this product and discussing the practical and
legal uses of NetIntercept in their agencies.
